The appearance of pixels in a bitmapped image. For example, when an image is displayed or printed too large, the individual, square pixels are discernible to the naked eye where one color or shade of gray blends into another. Sometimes, images are pixelated purposely for special effects.





A Pixelated Picture
The top picture was pixelated in Adobe PhotoShop. There are more than a half dozen "Pixelate" options in PhotoShop's Filter menu. The middle picture uses the standard square cell, wich can contain from two to 64 pixels (this one uses nine). The bottom picture uses a crystal cell pattern.
