The Phalanx

The phalanx was an ancient formation of infantry in which soldiers stood shoulder to shoulder in rows of eight or 16, forming a solid block that could sweep through the more dispersed ranks of the enemy. First used by the Sumerians and fully developed by the ancient Greeks, the phalanx reached its apex when Philip II and Alexander the Great used the great Macedonian phalanx to conquer all of Greece and the Middle East. Los Angeles Is Founded (1781)

Scientist Fail to Identify Intelligence Genes

Decades of studies involving twins and adopted children have shown that genes have a significant influence on intelligence and that this influence increases as people pass from childhood into adulthood; however, pinpointing the genes involved has proved difficult. Scientists used to believe that fewer than half a dozen genes affect intelligence quotient (IQ), but recent studies suggest that at least 1,000 may actually be involved. Because each of these genes has such a minute impact, researchers have been unable to identify which ones influence IQ. Still, they estimate that at least 40 to 50 percent of the differences in IQ result from genetic influences. More...
