L'Anse aux Meadows

Located on the northern tip of Newfoundland, Canada, L'Anse aux Meadows is the site of the first known European settlements in the New World. Norse settlers may have established as many as three settlements there near the end of the 10th century. After fighting each other, the settlers and the Inuit—whom the Norse called Skraeling—established a regular trade relationship, but the settlements were soon abandoned. What evidence indicates that the Norse settlers may have traveled farther south? More...

Henry Hudson Discovers Hudson Bay (1610)

After several failed attempts to find a northeast passage to Asia, Hudson, a veteran sea captain, sailed west and began probing N America to find a way through it by ship. In 1610, he discovered Hudson Bay but lingered too long and became trapped there by winter ice. When the weather warmed, Hudson wanted to continue exploring, but his starved and diseased crew refused. They mutinied and set Hudson, his son, and a few others adrift in a small boat without food or water. What happened to them? More...

Myrna Loy (1905)

Originally typecast in exotic roles, often as a vamp, film actress Myrna Loy soon earned praise for her witty sophistication in 1934's The Thin Man. By 1936, she was a top box-office draw. Offscreen, she was never associated with Hollywood glamour or scandal. Instead, she was one of the few actors to protest against the House Committee on Un-American Activities during the McCarthy era. Her outspokenness on another issue resulted in her inclusion on what world leader's personal blacklist? More...

Feast of Forgiveness (2017)

The Festa del Perdono, or Feast of Forgiveness, is observed annually in Assisi, Italy, where St. Francis built his humble hermitage, known as the Porciúncula ("little portion"), in the 13th century. Porciúncula also refers to the plenary indulgence that used to be given to those who visited this sanctuary on August 2, the date set by Pope Honorius III in 1221. Although in the beginning the indulgence could only be gained in the Porciúncula, the privilege was eventually extended to all churches having a connection with the Franciscan order. More...

World Population to Reach 7 Billion This Year

Throughout much of history, the global human population grew slowly, reaching 1 billion in about 1800. The world's population has increased rapidly since that time, growing by about 4 billion in the past 50 years alone. Later this year, it is expected to cross the 7 billion mark, and according to UN projections, 10 billion people will be crowding the planet by 2100. Nearly all population growth for the next few decades is expected to be in underdeveloped regions, straining their limited resources. Meanwhile, the populations of more developed countries will remain flat, meaning there will be fewer working-age adults to support retirees living on pensions. More...
