Alzheimer's Disease

Alzheimer's is a degenerative disease of nerve cells in the cerebral cortex that leads to atrophy of the brain and senile dementia. First described in 1906, the disease is characterized by abnormal accumulation of plaques and malformed nerve cells. The disease usually affects people over age 65; short-term memory loss is an early symptom. The cause of Alzheimer's is not known, and, as yet, there is no known cure. Weimar Constitution Signed into Law (1919)

Written immediately after World War I, the Weimar Constitution was the document that governed the short-lived Weimar Republic of Germany. It declared the nation a federal republic governed by a president and parliament and was a strong attempt to establish a liberal democracy in Germany. A German patriot and educator at a time when Europe was actively trying to free itself from Napoleonic rule, Jahn founded a gymnastic society, Turnverein, to build strength and fellowship among young people as well as help foster a nationalistic spirit among members. After Napoleon's defeat, German leaders came to view the once-sanctioned organization as a threat and had its founder arrested in 1819 and a national ban placed on gymnastics. Battle of Flowers (2016)

First held in 1902 as part of the celebration for the coronation of Edward VII and Queen Alexandra, the Battle of Flowers takes place on Jersey in the British Channel Islands every August. It begins with a parade of floats covered in flowers, many of which are quite elaborate and take months to prepare. Spectators no longer engage in a flower-throwing melee after the parade—these days the "battle" consists of a competition for the finest floats.
