Status Quo Ante Bellum

The Latin term status quo—literally "the state in which"—is commonly, and often casually, used to refer to an existing state of affairs. However, when the words ante bellum are tacked on to the end of the phrase, it is transformed into a very specific and weighty legal principle relating to the cessation of international hostilities. When belligerent parties negotiating a peace treaty agree to the principle of status quo ante bellum, they are consenting to do what? More...

The Pullman Strike Begins (1894)

The Pullman Strike was a strike of about 50,000 US rail workers. It was initiated after the Pullman railcar company cut wages by 25%, yet kept rents high in the company-owned town where workers lived. The company refused arbitration, and the railway union called for a strike and nationwide boycott. Sympathy strikes followed in 27 states. Salvador Dalí (1904)

Dalí was a Spanish painter whose striking images and eccentric personality made him the world's most recognized surrealist artist. In his most famous work, The Persistence of Memory, limp watches melt in an eerie landscape. Which candy brand's logo was designed by Dalí? More...

Participants walked barefoot, cleansed their hands three times, and threw black beans behind them nine times to appease the spirits of the dead. On the third day of the festival, a merchants' festival was held to ensure a prosperous year for business More...

Seamstress Survives 17 Days Trapped in Factory Rubble

On Friday, rescue workers digging through the rubble of a collapsed garment factory in Bangladesh experienced an emotion they had not felt at the site in weeks—joy. Hours after the death toll from the disaster officially climbed above 1,000, a seamstress was pulled from the debris alive and in fairly good condition considering the ordeal she had suffered. Trapped for 17 days in the ruins of the 8-story building, the woman apparently survived on water and dried food that was near her. Not a single survivor had been found since April 28, and many involved in the recovery effort had given up hope of locating anyone else alive. More...
