The Longest Professional Baseball Game

When players from the minor-league baseball teams the Pawtucket Red Sox and the Rochester Red Wings took the field at around 8 PM on April 18, 1981, they had no idea they would soon be making history. With the score tied, play continued into the frigid morning. Players burned broken bats for warmth, and the 1,740 fans in attendance dwindled to 19. The game was finally called at 4:07 AM after eight hours—and 32 innings. When the game resumed two months later, it took Pawtucket how long to win? More...

John Quincy Adams Elected US President by Congress (1825)

Without a strong party system in place, the 1824 US presidential election was based on regional, rather than party, support. Consequently, of the five candidates who ran for office, none received enough electoral votes to take office, sending the decision to the House of Representatives under the terms of the twelfth amendment. Thaipusam (2017)

Thaipusam is a dramatic Hindu festival celebrated in India, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Singapore, and elsewhere. The day marks the victory of the god Subramaniam (Lord Murugar) over the demons, and it is a time of penance, usually involving self-mortification. In Malaysia, a statue of Subramaniam is taken from the Sri Mariamman temple and placed in a silver chariot. Then begins a grand procession to his tomb in the Batu Caves, where the statue is carried up 272 steps and placed beside the permanent statue kept there. The next day about 200,000 people begin to pay homage. More...

Vodka Hastening Death in Russian Men

One in four Russian men dies before the age of 55, compared to just one in 10 in the US and seven in 100 in the UK, and researchers say vodka is largely to blame for the extremely high premature death rate in Russian males. Men who reported smoking and drinking three or more half-liter bottles of vodka a week were found in a recent study to have a much greater risk of premature death than those who smoked but consumed less than one bottle of vodka a week. Alcohol poisoning, accidents, violence, suicide, and diseases like throat and liver cancer, pancreatitis, and liver disease were among the most frequent causes of death in heavy drinkers. More...
