The Kofun Period in Japan

Perhaps the oldest era in the recorded history of Japan, the Kofun period began in the 3rd century. Though Japanese tribal leaders remained in close economic and political contact with Korea during this period, they also increasingly consolidated their power. It was a critical stage in the evolution of a unified Japanese state. The introduction of Buddhism in 538 CE marked the start of a new and different era. Recording Industry Association of American Sues Napster (1999)

Shortly after Napster was founded in 1999, the popular file-sharing service was hit with a copyright infringement lawsuit filed by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). The trial gave Napster so much publicity that usage of the service increased, despite RIAA's claim that Napster users were breaking the law by downloading copyrighted music for free. Her works include several independent heroines of the frontier and have been studied from a feminist perspective. Cather occasionally wore men's clothing and went by what nickname? More...

Pearl Harbor Day (2017)

Pearl Harbor Day marks the anniversary of the Japanese raid on Pearl Harbor in 1941, bringing the United States into World War II and widening the European war to the Pacific. Many states proclaim a Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, and each year services are held on December 7 at the Arizona Memorial in Pearl Harbor. The marble memorial, built over the sunken USS Arizona and dedicated in 1962, was designed by architect Alfred Preis, a resident of Honolulu who was an Austrian citizen in 1941 and was interned as an enemy alien. Could Parenthood Protect Against Premature Death?

Parents may attribute many of their gray hairs to the stress of child rearing, but they may be willing to overlook the cosmetic inconvenience once they learn about the link between parenthood and lifespan. A study of more than 21,000 couples seeking fertility treatment found that childless women were four times more likely to die prematurely than those with children. Childless men were about twice as likely as dads to die early. Researchers note that while the findings do not indicate a causative relationship between childlessness and premature death, there is clear evidence of an elevated mortality rate among those who desire but are unable to have children.
