Horsepower Indeed

Early streetcars had horsepower, literally; they were drawn by horses or mules and called "horsecars." By the late 1880s, there were 415 street railway companies in the US. However, horses could only work for about four hours a day and needed to be groomed, fed, and housed—and they left behind tremendous amounts of waste. These issues, coupled with the introduction of the overhead trolley system in 1887, spelled the end of the horsecar era. Where was the last functional horsecar in the US? More...

The Treaty of New Echota Is Signed (1835)

In 1835, a minority faction of the Cherokee tribe signed the Treaty of New Echota, which bound the entire tribe to move beyond the Mississippi River within three years. Although the Cherokee overwhelmingly repudiated the document and the US Supreme Court upheld the nation's autonomy, the state of Georgia forced their removal through military action. President Andrew Jackson refused to intervene, and thousands died on the march, known as the "Trail of Tears." To where did they march? More...

Although she began her career as a dancer, Moore's success came from her TV roles, first as the secretary on Richard Diamond, Private Detective and then as Laura Petrie on The Dick Van Dyke Show. Over the years, she has won multiple Emmys and Golden Globes. What film role earned her an Oscar nomination? More...

"Ice" Beneath the Ice?

Researchers have found deposits of kimberlite, a type of rock that frequently contains diamonds, in Antarctica, suggesting that the ice-covered continent could be hiding considerable riches. Environmentalists need not worry yet about diamond seekers, though; a 1991 treaty banned mining in Antarctica for 50 years, and many experts expect the ban to be extended when it expires in 2041. Some, however, are concerned that the recent find, added to the previous discoveries of gold, platinum, copper, iron, and coal on the continent, will induce signatories to let the ban lapse. More...
