"The Judgment"

"The Judgment" is a 1912 short story by Franz Kafka. He wrote it in a single sitting and described the experience as a creative outburst of the body and soul with the story emerging like a newborn "covered in filth and slime." He even allowed it to be published—most of his stories were only released posthumously. First Self-Sustaining Nuclear Chain Reaction Is Demonstrated (1942)

Constructed under an abandoned stand of bleachers at the University of Chicago, the world's first artificial nuclear reactor was little more than a pile of uranium and graphite bricks. Yakima Valley, Washington, has taken a conventional tradition—the Christmas parade—and added an interesting twist. The Country Christmas Lighted Farm Implement Parade, which takes place in the town of Sunnyside, showcases as many as 70 farm vehicles decorated with hundreds—sometimes thousands—of lights. Entries in the ceremony include tractors, combines, grape pickers, semi-trucks with flatbeds, and even horse-drawn floats. Other activities that accompany the celebration are a breakfast with Santa and Christmas caroling. More...

Scientists Take Tongue Piercing to the Next Level

Tongue piercings are generally seen as a fashion statement, but thanks to some enterprising researchers, they can now give quadriplegics—peop le paralyzed from the neck down—the freedom to get around independently. The team has developed a wheelchair control system that is operated by the movements of a magnetic barbell pierced through the tongue. The system could offer users greater control and speed than existing technologies, like the sip-and-puff devices that are currently used to operate motorized wheelchairs. More...
