Barefoot Parks

Popular in Europe, barefoot parks are places where visitors can dispense with shoes and safely experience various landscape textures underfoot. Their well-maintained terrain affords visitors the opportunity to walk across different types of soil, wade through streams, and even practice climbing—all while barefoot. Some parks offer activities such as foot gymnastics, in which people can practice picking up objects with their feet. How might barefoot parks improve one’s overall comfort and health? More...

Operation Uranus Begins (1942)

In the summer of 1941, a wave of German forces swept into the Soviet Union and proceeded to conquer a vast amount of territory. Stopped at Stalingrad, the Germans became mired in one of the most significant battles of WWII and were ill-prepared for the deteriorating Soviet weather. Mikhail Vasilyevich Lomonosov (1711)

With an extraordinarily broad education, Lomonosov became a prominent figure of 18th-century Russia in many capacities. His experiments in physics contradicted what commonly accepted theory? More...

Charlotte Perkins Gilman (1860-1935)

A huge audience listened to the NBC radio program that was broadcast to kick off the first National Bible Week scheduled for December 8-14, 1941; Pearl Harbor had been bombed just hours before. Twinkie-Maker Topples, Shoppers Stock Up

Twinkie fiends may soon be putting to the test the urban legend that the cream-filled cakes stay good for years, because the popular snack cake's maker, Hostess Brands Inc., is going out of business. The company has struggled financially for some time—emerging from a five-year period of bankruptcy in 2009 only to file again early this year. It is now seeking a US bankruptcy court's permission to close and sell its assets. Operations have been suspended at all of Hostess's US plants, and eBay sellers are already cashing in on the news, listing boxes of Twinkies for upwards of $100. More...
