The Phoenix Program

Coordinated with South Vietnam's security network during the Vietnam War, the Phoenix Program was a military and intelligence program designed by the US Central Intelligence Agency to "neutralize"—via capture or assassination—the insurgency's civilian support infrastructure, which included between 70,000 and 100,000 civilians in 1967. The Battle of Tigranocerta (69 BCE)

Through an alliance with his father-in-law, Mithradates VI of Pontus, Armenian King Tigranes the Great extended his conquests across Asia Minor and founded Tigranocerta—the modern Siirt, Turkey—as the capital of his large empire. In 69 BCE, Roman forces led by General Lucullus captured Tigranocerta. With the aid of Tigranes's son, Pompey vanquished Tigranes, who lost all of his conquests and had to pay tribute to Rome. Wenceslaus III of Bohemia (1289)

Wenceslaus III was king of Bohemia and of Hungary. Unable to assert his authority in Hungary, even with the help of his father, Wenceslaus II, he relinquished his claim to Duke Otto of Bavaria in 1305. He attempted to assert his hereditary claim to the Polish crown but was assassinated while marching to Poland. Red Flannel Festival (2018)

Held in Cedar Springs, Michigan, the Red Flannel Festival has its share of distinctive traditions. Scheer's Lumberjack Show features demonstrations by real lumberjacks who chop wood, speed-climb trees, and throw axes. The Keystope Kops, the icon of the festival, circulate the crowd to "arrest" offenders who do not wear red. Other festivities include a Prince and Princess Contest, a grand parade, and a window decorating contest. Two other established traditions, the Horseshow Throwing Contest and the Red Flannel Queen Scholarship Pageant, date back to the inaugural festival. More...
