The Basmachi Revolt

Begun in 1916, the Basmachi Revolt was a largely Turkic uprising against Russian rule in Central Asia that developed into a lengthy civil war between the Soviets and the rebels, who were called Basmachi, or "bandits," a deliberately pejorative term. Alaska Formally Transferred from Russia to US (1867)

In 1867, Russia sold Alaska to the United States for $7,200,000. The purchase was accomplished solely through the determined efforts of US Secretary of State William H. Seward, and for many years afterward the land was derisively called "Seward's Folly" or "Seward's Icebox" because of its supposed uselessness. Thomas Love Peacock (1785)

Peacock was an English writer whose comic and satirical novels—which contain some of his best poems—parody the intellectual pretenses of his age. After Shelley's death, Peacock became his literary executor. Peacock died at the age of 80 from injuries sustained while trying to save what from a fire? More...

Two years later, Azerbaijan came under Soviet rule. Azerbaijan's new independence day commemorates the declaration of independence made by the Supreme Soviet of Azerbaijan on October 18, 1991. After the U.S.S.R. ceased to exist as a geopolitical entity in December 1991, Azerbaijan became an official independent state on December 26, 1991. More...
