The Fedora

The fedora is a soft, medium-brimmed, felt hat with a creased crown and, usually, a band. It is often associated with film noir private detectives and Prohibition-era Mafiosos, and it tops off most zoot suits. Considered an essential piece of menswear in the US in the 1940s and 50s, the fedora fell out of fashion in the early 60s, when thinner lapels and ties called for shorter-brimmed hats, and when, according to one theory, American men saw what public figure without one? Restaurateur Drops $736,000 on One Bluefin Tuna

A 593-lb (269-kg) bluefin tuna fetched a record price of $736,000 (56.49 million yen) at auction in Japan, which translates to a cost of $2,737 (210,000 yen) per kilogram of fish. The sale beat the previous record price for a bluefin tuna by over $300,000 (24 million yen). The fish was sold at the Tsukiji fish market's first auction of the year, a celebratory event at which record bids are often made. The buyer, who owns a chain of sushi restaurants, said he placed the record-breaking bid in part to help Japan on its road to recovery and to prevent the tuna from being taken overseas. More...
