Henry Percy, 9th Earl of Northumberland

Percy was an English aristocrat who inherited his title from his father when he was in his early 20s. Under James I, Percy was imprisoned in the Tower of London for suspicion of involvement in the Gunpowder Plot, which was undertaken in part by his relative Thomas Percy. While in prison, he made the acquaintance of Sir Walter Raleigh, who was also confined there, and earned the sobriquet "The Wizard Earl" for his scientific experiments. Dr. James Bedford Becomes First Person to Undergo Cryopreservation (1967)

The field of cryonics involves techniques in which cold is applied for a variety of therapeutic goals, including brief local anesthesia, destruction of superficial skin lesions, and preservation of cells, tissue, and organs—or the entire body—in the hope that healing and resuscitation may be possible in the future. Zanzibar Revolution Day (2017)

In December 1963, the African island of Zanzibar won independence from England. On January 12, 1964, a revolution led by John Okello of the Afro-Shirazi Party overthrew the sultan who ruled Zanzibar. Abeid Karume was named president and the country's name changed to the People's Republic of Zanzibar (now a semiautonomous part of Tanzania since merging with neighboring Tanganyika). Zanzibar Revolution Day marks the occasion of the revolt that installed Karume as president. 2011 Was a Bad Year for the Elephants

Global seizures of ivory in 2011 reached record levels, totaling over 23 tons of ivory, which translates to about 2,500 dead elephants. The seizures indicate that there has been an unprecedented surge in African elephant poaching, particularly in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Zimbabwe, Zambia, northern Mozambique, Tanzania, and Kenya. Most of the illegal ivory is sent to China and Thailand, where demand for the decorative material is high and has been growing, despite the fact that a global ban on the ivory trade went into effect in 1989.
