Internet Router

(1) A router in the Internet that forwards IP packets between local, regional and national providers. Same as "IP router."

(2) (InterNet Router) Macintosh software from Apple that internetworks different access methods (LocalTalk, EtherTalk, TokenTalk, etc.) and can reside in any network station. Each Router can connect up to eight networks with a maximum of 1,024 networks and 16 million nodes.

The core technology supporting Wind's mobile network is the high performance Cisco 7513 Internet Router running Cisco IOS based ITP software.
Nasdaq:CSCO) today announced that Guinness World Records has certified the Cisco Carrier Routing System (CRS-1) as the highest capacity Internet router ever developed at 92 terabits (92 trillion bits per second) of total throughput, designed to afford up to 100 times more capacity than previously available.
Cisco is also demonstrating forthcoming IPv6 Phase III capabilities including native support for the Open Shortest Path First (OSPF) routing protocol for large-scale deployments and hardware-accelerated IPv6 forwarding on the Cisco 12000 Series Internet Router at the IPv6 Forum Summit in Japan on December 3rd.
