Hamming code

Also found in: Wikipedia 0.05 sec.

An error correction method that intersperses three check bits at the end of each four data bits. At the receiving station, the check bits are used to detect and correct one-bit errors automatically.

(algorithm)Hamming code - Extra, redundant bits added to stored or transmitted data for the purposes of error detection and correction.

Named after the mathematician Richard Hamming, Hamming codes greatly improve the reliability of data, e.g. from distant space probes, where it is impractical, because of the long transmission delay, to correct errors by requesting retransmission.

Hamming, 81, is the computer scientist and mathematician who developed the Hamming Codes, which allow computers to correct their own mistakes.
According to an error-correcting scheme known as the Hamming code, the addition of a carefully defined sequence of three digits to each of these blocks makes it possible to detect and correct errors that corrupt a transmitted message.
Logical blocks are distributed across "data disks" and protected by Hamming code.
