H.264

Also found in: Wikipedia 0.47 sec.

An ITU standard for compressing video based on MPEG-4 that is expected to be widely used, especially for high-definition video. Formerly known as "H.26L" by the ITU, it is also known as "MPEG-4 Part 10" by the ISO MPEG group, which jointly developed the codec.

Taking advantage of today's high-speed chips, H.264 delivers MPEG-2 quality at a data rate up to three times smaller. It also provides a frame size four times that of MPEG-4 at the same data rate.

Advanced Video Coding (MPEG-4 AVC)
In order to achieve the reduction in bandwidth over earlier MPEG modes and the ITU H.263 standard, H.264 uses a large number of techniques dubbed "Advanced Video Coding" (AVC). Compression is provided in several profiles from Baseline for low-end applications to High Profile for HD material. See H.263, H.323, MPEG and codec.

(video, standard)H.264 - (Or Advanced Video Coding, AVC) A low bit rate visual communication standard used in video conferencing. H.264 was developed by MPEG and ITU-T VCEG to replace H.263.
