(robotics)droid - (From "android") The robots of the Star Wars universe. While androids look somewhat human-like, Star Wars' droids are typically fashioned in the likeness of their creators or in a utilitarian design that stresses function over appearance. Droids are equipped with artificial intelligence, though some are naturally created smarter than others depending on the function they are designed to serve.

"Droid" is a Lucasfilm Ltd. trademark.

Today several Japanese firms, including such recognizable companies as Honda, Toyota, and Mitsubishi, are introducing prototype personal robots that look the part of C3PO, Lucas' "protocol droid.
Robbie earned his way into the Carnegie Mellon University Robot Hall of Fame (yes, there really is one), not so much because of scientific sophistication--he was equipped with flashing faux gyroscopes and scanners--but rather because he was the first Hollywood droid to have a personality and sense of humor.
Twentieth Century Fox brought out the animated comedy Robots about futuristic droids that look like recycled mid-20th-century toasters.
